How recently have you stopped to contemplate the power of God’s words? We sing of His power and talk about His power. Yet, do we think about what the power of His words has done? Throughout scripture, we encounter stories of God and Jesus speaking, in which, miraculous and supernatural things happen.
In Genesis, God spoke creation into being. Over and over in chapter one, God said and that was all it took to bring forth light in darkness; land and sky to separate the waters; vegetation to sprout; plants to bear seeds; two great sources of light to be hung; and creatures to fill the sea, sky and roam the land. His words emanated power and brought each of these things into being. Is it possible for the human mind to grasp what power comes from spoken words?
In Isaiah, God spoke destruction over nations. In chapter 11, we learn, “He will strike the land with discipline from His mouth, and He will kill the wicked with a command from His lips (v. 4).” He doesn’t have to raise a finger. By speaking His will, it happens. This sort of power puts comic book heroes to shame. So, how can we begin to understand what He is capable of through His Word?
In the Gospels, Jesus spoke to calm the sea and winds. We can read about Him commanding or rebuking the turbulent water and raging winds. Whether in chapter 8 of Matthew or Luke, and chapter 4 of Mark, His verbal commands are obeyed immediately—by nature! The disciples respond, “Who is this?” The power displayed shows His authority over such things. Do we respond to His power with the same awe and wonder as the disciples?
Jesus spoke many things for the benefit of mankind in the gospels. He shared in John 15 about His commands “so that our joy may be complete (v. 11).” In chapter 16, Jesus stated, “All this I have told you so you will not go astray (v. 1)” and “so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you (v.4).” Also in verse 33, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.” His Words, full of power, were given to bless us, prepare us and offer us what couldn’t be possible without Him. He spoke so we could know.
The power of God, through spoken word, is too much for us to grasp. He gave us His Story so we could see Him speak to us through it and show us how to speak those same words back to Him. His words have power. If we choose to speak them back over our situations or aloud when needs arise, His power is still there, waiting to breathe hope in us. Our minds may struggle to grasp understanding, but the awe and wonder can overflow. He spoke for our benefit and His power can still be discovered!
